une bague = ring (any kind of ring worn on finger)
un anneau = any plain circular band (finger ring, curtain ring etc)
(plural = anneaux)
A ring exchanged by a couple at a marriage or civil ceremony is sometimes referred to as "une alliance"
Do not confuse un anneau (ring) with un agneau (lamb)
un agneau |
But I digress. Back to the ring theme......
All of the following can be described as, une bague:
All of the following can be described as, un anneau:
des anneaux ou des alliances |
So we have the book, Le Seigneur des Anneaux par J.R.R. Tolkein
le seigneur = lord
des anneaux de rideau |
un rideau = curtain (plural = les rideaux)
un anneau taureau |
un taureau = bull (plural = les taureaux)
Like the star sign 'taurus'
With regard to plurals, can you see a pattern here?
Now you know that any French word ending in 'eau' is pluralised with an 'x'
Exemples:
l'eau / les eaux = water / waters
un gâteau / les gâteaux = cake / cakes
un anneau / les anneaux = ring / rings
un rideau / les rideaux = curtain / curtains
un taureau / les taureaux = bull / bulls
un agneau / les agneaux = lamb / lambs
Just to finish off the 'anneau' theme.....
Voici les anneaux olympiques |
Which segues very nicely into my next post. Coming soon, look out for the next post, where it's all about the Olympics!
