Il y a seulement une exception: être
je étais nous étions

(There is only one exception. The stem of être is ét. You then add the same endings)
2. EMPLOI (USAGE)
C'est le temps du passé qui exprime:
a) une description
le soleil brilllait
il pleuvait
le ciel était bleu
(The imperfect tense is a past tense used for: a) description e.g. The sun was shining, it was raining, the sky was blue)
b) une durée sans précision sur ses limites
En 1960 nous regardions la télé en noir et blanc
C'était cool!/ C'était génial!
b) something that happened regularly or a continuous state
e.g. In 1960 we watched t.v. in black and white / It was cool! It was brilliant!
c) une habitude
Quand j'étais jeune, je jouais au foot avec mes copains tous les soirs
c) something that used to happen e.g. when I was young I used to play football with my mates every evening
