L'Imparfait (The Imperfect Tense)

1. FORMATION

Nous fais-ons (Présent)

+

ais  ais  ait  ions  iez  aient

 (nous part of the present tense, take away the ons and add the endings)                

 Exemple:

 

faire

 

                                      je     faisais          nous   faisions

 

                                      tu     faisais          vous   faisiez

  
                                      il    } faisait           ils    }  faisaient

                                     elle }                     elles }

Il y a seulement une exception: être

 

 

                                     je     étais           nous   étions

 

                                     tu     étais           vous   étiez

 

                                     il    } était            ils    }  étaient

                     

                                    elle }                    elles}

 

(There is only one exception. The stem of être is ét. You then add the same endings)

 

 

2. EMPLOI (USAGE)

 

C'est le temps du passé qui exprime:

 

a) une description

 

le soleil brilllait

 

 

il pleuvait

 

 

le ciel était bleu

 

 

(The imperfect tense is a past tense used for: a) description e.g. The sun was shining, it was raining, the sky was blue)

 

b) une durée sans précision sur ses limites

 

En 1960 nous regardions la télé en noir et blanc

 

 

C'était cool!/ C'était génial!

 

b) something that happened regularly or a continuous state

e.g. In 1960 we watched t.v. in black and white   / It was cool! It was brilliant!

 

 

c) une habitude

 

Quand j'étais jeune, je jouais au foot avec mes copains tous les soirs

 

c) something that used to happen e.g. when I was young I used to play football with my mates every evening
