Welcome back to a new term!

 

This term we are going to look at French idioms (les expressions idiomatiques). This week's idiom is......

 

appeler un chat un chat

 

 

• Appeler un chat un chat", c'est dire les choses comme elles sont. 

 

• Quand on appelle un chat un chat, c'est qu'on parle franchement, honnêtement, en toute franchise.

 

• On ne fait pas de détour.

 

• On le dit simplement, directement, même si ça peut déranger des personnes. On ne cache pas la réalité

 

 

appeler un chat un chat = to call a spade a spade

 

 

Then we listened to the headlines from le journal en français facile  on the Radio Française Internationale (RFI) website and learnt the following:

 

temps universel = Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

 

les titres =  headlines

 

 à la une = the lead story or front page news

tellement = so  or so much 

 

Exemples: 

 

Il travaille tellement                  =    He works so much

Elle ne mange pas tellement    =   She doesn't eat all that much 

J'ai eu tellement  peur              =   I was so frightened

 

 

de nos jours                              =  these days, nowadays

une réligieuse                           =  nun

un couvent                                =  convent 

 

 

Il y a un couvent près de l'appartement de Linda. Les réligieuses habitent dans un couvent. De nos jours, elles ne portent pas l'habit. 

 

 

une réligieuse is also the name for a cake made of choux pastry with chocolate (or mocha)and cream.
